About Southeast Side

The Southeast Side is an established area of San Antonio that is undergoing extensive renovation and modernization. Change in the area was instigated by the Brooks City Base. It was the old Brooks Air Force Base and, when the federal government closed the base, the City of San Antonio took it over and formed a development group. The changes to the neighborhood were nothing short of swift and dramatic. The Southeast Side is now chock full of hotels, housing, and shopping malls, all resulting from the development group, making it the new, trendy neighborhood in the city.

Around Southeast Side

Pecan Valley is a primarily residential area on the city's Southeast Side, as is Comanche. Residents of Comanche love the nearby Comanche Park, rated as one of the city's finest parks. People also flock to South Side Lions Park, a 600-acre recreation area complete with lake, swimming pool, sports fields, walking trails, and a community center. Schools include Highlands High School and P.F. Stewart Elementary.

The Southeast Side houses some of San Antonio's great restaurant legends. People from all over the city come to eat at these established eateries. Restaurants like Little Red Barn and Capparelli's have been serving hungry Texans for decades. And the San Antonio motto of "Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Mexican Food" is alive and well at the mouth-watering Patty's Taco House and Brown's Mexican Food restaurants.

History! The San Antonio Missions are a group of five frontier mission complexes situated along a 7-mile stretch of the San Antonio river basin, and they've been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a designation that took ten years for the city to earn. The missions were built in the early eighteenth century and represent Spain's effort to colonize the then-northern frontier of New Spain. The architecture, archaeology, and history will astound you.

Most residents gather with friends and family at one of the iconic restaurants in this area. The development around the Brooks City Base has brought in many new businesses, including restaurants, movie theaters, and an arcade, and residents love that so much is available now without having to drive a distance. Road and utilities development have made everything easier.

The perfect Sunday is a stroll along the beautifully developed San Antonio River. This has been a beloved, long-term project for the city, and the renovation is quite remarkable. Walking trails stretch all the way from downtown to the mission sites. Kayaking has also become a very popular activity on nice, warm days.
