Around Theater District

The Theater District is a mix of brand new luxury high rises near Times Square, and older pre-war buildings closer to 9th Avenue. For the most part, Times Square is made up of hotels and office buildings, but as you move to the blocks outside the tourist capital of the city, there are brownstones that sit above cafes and restaurants. The farther towards 9th Avenue you go, the more local things get. There are less housing options on the east side of the Theater District as 6th and 7th Avenues are mostly lined with shops, restaurants, and office buildings.

The real beauty—and where the neighborhood gets its name—are the Broadway theaters. Each one has intricate designs and ornate edifices that transport you into a magical world of musicals and plays. As you move out of Times Square and Broadway, the neighborhood vibe becomes a little more quiet. Keep an eye out for small “hole in the wall” restaurants and cafes that might be overlooked by people quickly passing by. A favorite pastime of all New Yorkers is to people-watch, and there is no better place to do this than in the Theater District. It is a common occurrence to cross paths with celebrities and Broadway stars, so keep your eyes open.

If you call the Theater District home, Restaurant Row along 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues is where you eat. Every now and then you might want to venture down to Times Square to get dinner and a show at the Hard Rock Cafe, but most residents of the Theater District tend to spend their meal times on Restaurant Row and the surrounding blocks. With restaurants like Hold Fast Kitchen and Spirits that serve creative takes on pub fare, and Becco for their unique pasta tasting menu and Italian cuisine, you’ll never run out of new menu items to try. There are also a plethora of bar and cocktail lounges in the area for before and after dinner drinks.

Nightlife in the Theater District has two peaks. The first happens in the hours before 8:00 p.m. right before the Broadway shows start. Then the neighborhood grows slightly calmer as people have taken their seats in the theater. It is during this time that locals of the neighborhood venture out to their favorite spots for dinner and drinks. When the Broadway shows let out, a second wave of Friday night fun begins. Residents who don’t necessarily want to see a theater show, but want entertainment, might find themselves in a piano bar like Don’t Tell Mama on Restaurant Row. Here, you can listen to different musicians sing and play all of your favorite tunes.

Grab a coffee or espresso at Frisson Espresso on 47th Street. Then walk through Times Square as vendors set up shop for the day. Although parks are limited in the Theater District, just outside its boundaries is Bryant Park and the New York Library. Grab a book and sit on the lawn while you finish your coffee. Then it’s off to brunch at a classic New York diner such as Westway Diner on 9th Avenue. Head to Broadway for the matinee of a new show or one of your favorites. After the curtain falls, make your way to Sushi of Gari 46 on Restaurant Row. End with a nightcap at one of the many local bars in the area.

Times Square is at the heart of the Theater District and New York City, so there is no lack of transportation. You can either walk or bike your way around the neighborhood or take public transit. Every major MTA subway line passes through Times Square. Whether you’re looking to travel to other neighborhoods in Manhattan or to one of the other boroughs, you’ll have easy subway access. You can also catch buses to any of the New York City airports from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Yellow cabs and car-sharing services can also be spotted pretty much everywhere within the Theater District. If you want another way to get out of the city, you can catch the A, C, or E trains to Penn Station to ride the Amtrak or New Jersey transit to the countryside. You can also hop on the 7 train to Grand Central Terminal where the MetroNorth will take you into Connecticut or upstate New York.
