My 3 older stepchildren graduated from Bowie and I have two kids at Bowie now. Each of them is very different, in academic and social interests, and all of them have found success at Bowie. At first I was nervous about having my kids attend such a large school, but believe me all of my kiddos have been known by their teachers. And there are so many great programs that it really does seem like there is something for every kid. Mine have been super involved with JROTC, theater and debate, art club (my stepdaughter went to Italy with this group!), and cheer. One of my kids has special academic needs and I have been very impressed with the way the school helped him transition from middle school. He is now really pretty self sufficient and as a junior, he has the best grades he has ever earned.

My twins have been very happy with Bowie. They are taking academically challenging classes like AP, pre-AP, and UT OnRamp. As at any large, urban, public school, not everything is perfect. Some teachers are definitely better than others, but if the kid makes some effort to ask about classes and teachers and parents make the same effort by reaching out to other parents and find ways to get involved, your child will likely have a great experience at Bowie.

An amazing high school! Bowie really prepares their students for college - my daughter was accepted into every university she applied to and was also offered scholarships to everyone, UT, NYU, SMU, TCU, BAYOR, BOSTON, EMERSON... At mid-terms, during her Freshman year at UT, while the administration was warning parents about children failing, Bowie kids were sailing through! My daughter graduated with honors from Bowie and just made the Dean's List her first year at UT. As for people saying Bowie is "unwelcoming or unfriendly", they obviously haven't gone up to the school and spoken to the administration and become involved.

The leadership @ Bowie is unfriendly and unwelcoming. Just look at their website to try to find info for the counselors. No phone numbers/emails are listed like they are at other schools. We have been given so much incorrect information from the counselors and have had to do research within the district to find out the correct information. There are great teachers at Bowie, but the leadership and other staff could be friendlier and better informed. Also Bowie uses coaches to teach many fine arts classes and often the coaches are very unfamiliar with the arts they are teaching. They do not know how to pronounce the words that are often derived from French and their English grammar leaves a lot to be desired as well.
