Around University Heights
University Heights is located on an ever-so-subtle hill that lifts its buildings to higher ground. When it comes to desirability, the apartment complexes west of University Avenue have aged the best. The area of the neighborhood to the east of this market can be closer to residential establishments and busier roads. Single-family brick homes are scattered throughout the neighborhood, as well.
The more you venture east towards the rest of the Bronx, the more you’ll find a variety of food options. There’s no shortage of delis, which are frequented by students. There are also more family-friendly establishments like snack bars offering juices and healthy baked goods as well as Mexican eateries. The neighborhood is also home to Dominican and West African restaurants.
Since there are no on-campus housing options at Bronx Community College, there’s a quiet vibe that comes every night as students commute to their respective homes. West Fordham Road is one of the busiest commerce strips in the neighborhood—home to a lively Dallas BBQ. West Burnside Avenue seems to have every mom-and-pop shop you could ever need. Aqueduct Walk showcases how fresh water was carried into the community from the 1840s to the 1950s.
Start your Friday night at Empanadas RD. Here, creative sandwiches and empanadas are served in an unassuming environment, along with juices and shakes. After you’ve enjoyed your meal, head over to Dallas BBQ for one of its iconic weekend DJ sets. If the night’s still going, head to any of the local dive bars on Burnside Avenue.
Begin your weekend with breakfast at Running Cool Restaurant, which offers traditional Jamaican fare. Then, walk through the empty campus at Bronx Community College, perhaps stopping in the bookstore for something to read. Take a walk along the Harlem River, down into Roberto Clemente State Park. Here, explore the trails and peaceful environment at one of the Bronx’s most underrated parks.
Metro North Railroad's Hudson line makes a stop directly at University Heights, a popular option for those commuting into class. Getting to Grand Central Station with this method takes under 25 minutes. Another option is the 4 train, which stops along Jerome Avenue. There is some street parking in the area, but most residents depend on other transportation options.
