Glen Allen Elementary School

As someone who went through Henrico County schools as a child I was blown away by GAES. The teachers are enthusiastic, friendly, knowledgeable and skilled at what they do. Every time I visit I’m struck by the fact that every staff member seems to know every child by name and the rapport between teachers and students is amazing. It’s almost like a private school within the public education system. I am thrilled that my children are attending GAES.

This school got a great score - a 9 out of 10, however many of the disappointed parents have pulled their kids from the school and opted for private school. It is extremely overcrowded , so much so that we got emails at report card from our teacher saying that unless there was an issue the teacher would not be scheduling a conference. In other words they were too busy to meet with us, unless there was an issue. I don't want the only relationship that I have with my child's teacher to be if there is a problem. I am also disappointed in the leadership. GAES does well on the standardized tests (SOL's) because that is all that is taught. A year of teaching to the test. My kid's eyes glazed over with the constant testing and memorization. Also the current principal, while professional and prompt in her responses to concerned parents offers no real solutions, or the ability to think outside the box. Perhaps that is due to the extreme overcrowding, she is likely surviving and not thriving. This trickles down to our students. A survive not thrive mentality.

Glen Allen is a great place to grow and learn! The faculty are some of the best teacher's around! We just love this school!

As a parent of two kids going to GAES, I can't not thank the faculty and staff enough fir great education and love they are providing to our kids.. This is an old established school with great track record. I would recommend this school to any of my friends... GAES rocks!!!
