Around West Seattle
Many upscale townhouses and single-family homes line up eastside along the appropriately-named Beach Drive. Some of Seattle’s best waterfront views can be found here from Alki Beach on the north down to Lincoln Park Way. These pockets of homes tend to be more upscale and are slightly remote from the hustle of the city, giving off more of a vacation-like feel. The other half of the large neighborhood features the best of both urban and suburban environments with shops and restaurants just a short walk away. Large grocery stores and other amenities can be found down Alaska Street.
Serving Northern Italian cuisine, La Rustica is a long-standing neighborhood eatery that offers a beautiful waterfront view to match in a smaller café setting. However, most of the neighborhood’s restaurants and cafes tend to be found down California Avenue. Just about every type of cuisine can be found in West Seattle, including Asian, Indian, Thai, and even Australian. You’ll also find establishments offering menu items like pizza, tapas, smoked meats, vegan coffee, and baked goods.
It’s hard to pass up the beach, but if you can pull yourself away, you’ll find a collection of wineries, antique shops, galleries, and parks for a relaxing picnic or a nice outlet for kids with cabin fever. Beachcombers appreciate the tide pools found at Me-Kwa-Mooks Park, and Myrtle Reservoir Park offers a great play area with easy viewing for parents to keep an eye on their kids.
In addition to fine or fun dining, West Seattle is home to the Arts West Theatre presenting live productions all year long. Stop by the Corner Pocket on Alaska Street for pool or pinball. During the summer, don’t miss the West Seattle Outdoor Movies shown just off Genesee Street.
Begin your day with breakfast at Easy Street Records—a record store and diner where you can peruse your favorite music after a tasty meal. Stop by the year-round West Seattle Farmers Market to pick up some fresh produce and products from local vendors. Continue north to check out everything chic or shabby at the Antique Mall of West Seattle. Meet up friends or just challenge each other to a game or two at Meeples Games. On the way home, stop off for some homemade ice cream at the Husky Deli.
Overall, West Seattle is fairly walkable and bike-friendly. Almost everyone owns a car, at least for short trips. Getting to Downtown Seattle takes about 15 minutes. Bus riders will appreciate the RapidRide C Line, which stretches from Downtown Seattle to Fauntleroy Park. It travels mostly on Fauntleroy Way, which is pretty much in the middle of West Seattle. Buses come on a regular basis between 10 and 15 minutes. The whole distance will take about an hour to go from one end to the other.
