Around Whittier
If you're seeking a modest Queen Anne or Classic Cottage built in the late-nineteenth or early twentieth-century, Whittier is a good place to look. In addition to historic properties, the neighborhood also includes a few modern masterpieces of architecture that boast plenty of space and unique designs. Luxury condos close to Downtown Boulder offer a more urban experience and place a premium on convenience.
Whittier shares its western border with Downtown Boulder, which offers a wide variety of restaurants within walking or biking distance. Prices run the gamut from cheap eats to indulgent dining in elaborate dining rooms. While fewer people tend to walk eastward on Pearl Street past 20th Street, residents venture this way for more local dining options. A popular regional sandwich spot has an outpost here, while a restaurant specializing in seasonal American fare attracts diners to its charming dining room inside a cottage with a kid-friendly backyard.
Whittier sees more activity during warmer months, especially between March and November. It is far less busy than neighboring Downtown Boulder, simply because it's less of a destination for visitors. The neighborhood is quieter the farther you head north, and busier the more you travel in all other directions. Whittier's greatest charm is its collection of vernacular architecture from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. It's rare to see a teardown in these parts, which prefers older homes with gardens and mature houses. There are four small parks in the neighborhood with limited recreational opportunities and enough space for relaxation.
Whittier residents love local restaurants as much as craft beer, kombucha, and coffee. A walk along Pearl or Walnut Street will fill out any Friday evening. For a more programmed Friday night, head to Dairy Arts Center, an old dairy plant that now houses art galleries, a cinema, and theaters for live performances. Afterward, grab a nightcap at Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery, where you might also catch a live bluegrass band on the right night.
Grab brunch with friends or family on Pearl or Walnut Street, or join a game of basketball at Greenleaf Park on Spruce Street. Living in Whittier puts you near Boulder Canyon and the hiking trails of Mount Sanitas, an ideal place to enjoy nature and spectacular views from the foothills. When you want to stay closer to home, bike to Boulder Creek for a ride through Emma Gomez Martinez Park and beyond.
Housing costs in Whittier are on the rise, especially north of Pearl Street. The neighborhood's high-end estates are truly a sight to behold and fit for buyers with big budgets. Whittier's most affordable options are condo units in the mid-rise buildings that sit on the south side of the neighborhood. Homes elsewhere are typically at a higher price point, though you might find slightly lower prices here than in nearby Newlands.
Whittier is popular for walkers and bikers. It's common to see bikers on the bike lanes along Walnut, Spruce, Pine, 20th, and Folsom streets. There are three B-cycle bike-share stations on Pearl Street between 20th and 28th streets for quick trips. Nearby at 14th and Walnut is Downtown Boulder Station, which houses a fleet of buses that takes passengers around Boulder and connects with regional lines. Most residents have reserved parking or no car at all here. The City of Boulder manages nearby public parking garages, surface lots, and on-street pay stations.
