Woodlawn Heights

Bronx, New York Homes for Sale

About Woodlawn Heights

Home to a 19th-century cemetery that also happens to be a national arboretum, Woodlawn Heights is a woodsy enclave in the Bronx. If square footage and greenspace are on your mind, the neighborhood makes a convincing argument. Woodlawn’s well-defined boundaries created a cloistered feeling from the rest of the Bronx, but a lack of subway access contributes to this effect in no small way, as well. It’s a family-oriented community with most residences boasting a park, or at least, a cemetery view.

Around Woodlawn Heights

Living on Van Cortlandt Park East is the most desirable area in the neighborhood. Living on E 23rd Street, bordering Woodlawn Cemetery, isn’t all that bad either. As long as a home is off Katonah Avenue, there’s a great likelihood that the street is quiet and maybe even tree-lined. There is a variety of home styles in this area ranging from one and two-story single-family homes, co-ops, attached homes, and multi-family homes. Since there isn’t a local subway station, there’s no reason to base location off of accessibility. Plus, the neighborhood is small enough that the possibility of a less than desirable location is quite rare.

Irish and Italian dining options abound, thanks to Woodlawn Heights’s heritage. If you’re in the mood for this cuisine, try Bella Napoli II or Katonah Pizza & Pasta or Rory Dolan’s or McKeon’s Bar. The nearby Market at Bissel Gardens is open on Saturdays. While there isn’t an outstanding variety of dining options in Woodlawn Heights, the neighborhood does treasure its long-time institutions—many restaurants have called Woodlawn home for generations.

Tight boundaries, thanks to Van Cortlandt Park and Woodlawn Cemetery give the neighborhood a close-knit feeling. Katonah Avenue is the main street for finding local businesses and restaurants. Westchester County, just to the north, gives Woodlawn Heights a significantly suburban feeling. But overall, the Bronx vibe keeps things from feeling sleepy. There are several low-rise buildings, standalone single-family homes, and row houses. Local schools are lauded as reason enough for homebuyers to make the move to this suburban-style neighborhood, and the Bronx High School of Science is a 40-minute bus ride away.

Check to see if there’s anything showing at the Lehman Center for Performing Arts, a 30-minute bus ride south from Woodlawn. Once back in the neighborhood, embrace the local Irish heritage by checking out some of the iconic Irish pubs on Katonah Avenue. Stop for dinner at Curry Spot or Rambling House, also on the main street of Woodlawn Heights. Behan’s Pub is your best bet for a late-night drink and activities.

With Van Cortlandt Park as close as it is, there really is no better start to the morning than a walk through its numerous paths. Begin your day with breakfast from Eileen’s, a great Irish spot on your way to the park. Visit Wave Hill, a public garden with an alpine house, greenhouses, multiple flower gardens, and a cultural center. End the day with dinner at Patrizia’s of Woodlawn, a popular local spot for tasty pizza.

The biggest drawback to life in Woodlawn Heights is no easy access to a subway station. One trusted route is to take the 4 train uptown and transfer to the Bx16. The 2 train gets you close, but a walk is still required. Another option is to opt for Metro-North’s Harlem line from Grand Central. This takes less than 30 minutes and makes for an easy commute for those who call the neighborhood home. Luckily, owning a car is popular and lots of houses come with garage parking.
