Downey is a charming suburb located in the southeast corner of Los Angeles County. Even though this city is only a 20-minute drive to Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) in traffic, many Angelenos aren’t too familiar with the diverse area, so when they’re actually there—they don’t know what to do. Downey has been relatively low-key and laidback throughout the years, but more people are considering a move to the area thanks to its growing economy, healthcare, amenities, and overall affordability. Like many cities in Southern California, the weather in Downey is consistently sunny and temperate year-round, so during the summer, there are countless options for families looking to have an action-packed day out.

Here are six family-friendly activities to do in Downey this summer.

Columbia Memorial Space Center

In its past, Downey was an aerospace industry hub, and Columbia Memorial Space Center is the city’s go-to spot for families to learn about science and innovation. Downey students are guaranteed free admission if, they visit the space center with their family, and bring a copy of their residency or school enrollment. The space center also hosts events like Rocket Fever, Los Angeles’ only urban rocket festival.

Studio Movie Grill Downey

Skip your average dinner and TV at home this summer and take the family out to Studio Movie Grill Downey for in-seat dining, reclining seats, and the latest movies. Not only will the kids get to watch new releases, they can also enjoy a restaurant ordered meal at the same time. Parents can relax a bit and order from the theater’s full-service bar, which features handcrafted cocktails, beers, and margaritas. You also have the option of hanging out in the theater’s comfy lounge before or after your movie.

Bubblemania and Company

If you’re throwing a party this summer, whether it’s a birthday party or a simple pool party to cool off from the hot weather, Bubblemania and Company is a creative way to impress the kids. The Bubblologist performs a 30- to 40-minute bubble show with various colors and shapes. Forget calling the neighborhood clown; kids can get their hands soapy as the Bubblologist helps them concoct a wide array of bubbles using hands-on bubble wands.

Golf n’ Stuff

Golf n’ Stuff is a small amusement park at the border of Downey and Norwalk. While Disneyland in Anaheim is a pricey and time-consuming option for the family, Gold n’ Stuff is much more affordable. This park offers inexpensive two-hour passes that feature unlimited access to entertainment. The entire family can enjoy two hours of go-kart rides, bumper boats, kid-friendly trains, and of course—mini golf. This park also has special activities during the summer, such as face painting, balloon crafting, and live entertainment. Another fun fact? This amusement park was where the original “Karate Kid” movie was filmed.

Menchie’s at Downey’s Landing

Did someone say froyo? Menchie’s is a frozen yogurt chain that runs throughout the San Fernando Valley, and it’s known for having fun toppings that are constantly changing. If it gets too hot in the summer, the entire family can enjoy a cup of froyo, and the kids will enjoy being able to pick their own toppings. Favorite Menchie’s flavors include the dulce de leche, dole pineapple, and creamy coconut, although flavors often vary and are only available for a limited time. After having a cup of frozen yogurt, simply walk outside to Downey Landing Center, one of the city’s newest shopping centers, and enjoy all the entertainment, dining, and stores available.

Dennis the Menace Park

Named after the popular comic strip, Dennis the Menace Playground is a large neighborhood park located towards the border of Downey and Monterey Park. Upon entering the park, families will see a huge steam engine, reminiscent of the Southern Pacific railroads. However, the playground’s main focus is its interesting play structures, such as the pirate ship, long walking bridge, walk-up slides, and mini-rock climbing equipment. The park is located inside the larger El Estero Park Complex, which offers families a dog park, picnic tables, paddle boats at the lake, and open greenspace.
