Living in a major city like San Francisco can be very fulfilling. You’re surrounded by lots of diversity, culture, interesting people, and the urban vibe can be contagiously thrilling. But one thing that metropolitan cities lack in comparison to their suburban counterparts is greenery.

Outdoorsy folks moving to San Francisco may be concerned that the city won’t offer much in the way of nature, but they’d be surprised to discover that San Francisco has many pockets of green to satisfy an inner adventurer. Here are the neighborhoods in the City by the Bay that nature lovers will adore.

Richmond District

The Richmond District is as green a residential neighborhood as you can get in San Francisco. Located right next to Golden Gate Park, the Richmond District is conveniently close to a huge mass of green even larger than New York City’s Central Park. The Richmond District is also home to Lincoln Park, which hugs the coastline and contains a large golf course overlooking the famous Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll never get tired of the view as that bridge peeks out above the foggy coastline.

Marina District

One of the most sought-after neighborhoods in San Francisco, the Marina District offers plenty of activities for nature lovers. The Marina Green is a beautiful spot for taking a romantic walk or jogging with your dog. Residents like to play games of frisbee and go for picnics along the water at Crissy Field. Additionally, the neighborhood offers great views of the water. The wide array of perks is reflected in the high price point of real estate, but locals would argue that the benefits outweigh the cost.

Lakeshore

Looking for a peaceful community that is situated near the action but also offers a quiet escape? Lakeshore is a popular neighborhood among families for its tranquil atmosphere and friendly vibe. While Lakeshore doesn’t offer many restaurants or shops, Lake Merced and many other parks are well-loved weekend destinations. Strolling San Francisco State University’s campus also makes for a nice day outdoors.

Outer Sunset

Living in this family-friendly neighborhood, you’re located a stone’s throw away from Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park, and Fort Funston. You can spend hours at any of those outdoor spots relaxing, walking, and playing sports. You’re also very close to Mt. Davidson, the highest point in the city. As a bonus, if you’re one of the select few who loves San Francisco’s rolling fog, living in Outer Sunset will be a dream come true.

Portola

Nestled among the postmodern homes and old cottages of Portola are pockets of green that outdoor enthusiasts will love. The crown jewel of the neighborhood? MacLaren Park, which is the second largest park in the city. It’s a great spot to get some exercise and fresh air, and the ponds and waterways throughout the park are the perfect locations for floating toy boats.

The family-friendly community of Glen Park has greenery in spades, with trees lining the streets and lush forests on the hills. Many residents also keep beautiful gardens that brighten up the sidewalks, and they’re the perfect scenery for an afternoon jog around the neighborhood. Plus, the community is conveniently near Glen Canyon Park, a favorite among the city’s nature-minded folks. You could spend all weekend discovering the neighborhood’s miles of hidden nature trails.
