School is out and the summer is here, which means it’s officially time to figure out what activities you’d like to do with the entire family. In an eclectic city like Los Angeles, parents might find it difficult to pinpoint appropriate kid-friendly activities. However, for families living in or staying near Arcadia in the San Gabriel Valley, there are actually plenty of summer activities to partake in.

Located just east of Pasadena towards the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, Arcadia is an ideal city for families with kids, young couples, and even established professionals. Thanks to its proximity to entertainment, vast amenities, quality cuisine, and highly regarded school districts and businesses, there are countless reasons to live in Arcadia

Below are six places to go for kid-friendly summer activities in Arcadia.

Located on Santa Anita Avenue is the Arcadia Community Regional County Park, which is also home to the Norman S. Johnson Aquatic Center, the city’s main swimming facility. Parents can plan the entire day at both the park and the pool. At the aquatic center, patrons have access to a competition-sized lap pool, therapy pool, and even a splash pad with fountains. After taking the kids swimming, the entire family can enjoy the park’s many playgrounds, bike paths, open greenspaces, and picnic areas.

Angeles National Forest

Arcadia has several recreational parks available for a family camping trip, but Angeles National Forest is perfect for those who want to explore nature, go fishing, or travel through a variety of hiking trails. Situated between the San Gabriel Mountains and the Sierra Pelona Mountains, this national forest is part of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, which protects the forest from possible environmental dangers. There are several campgrounds in the national forest, and in general, campsites are first-come, first-served with a maximum of a two-week stay on the site.

The Arboretum

From creating artwork and peacock watching to exploring gardens and historic structures, there’s always something to do at The Arboretum for the entire family. Kids can learn about horticulture and wildlife after admiring the site’s many gardens and plant collections. Since the Arboretum is home to plants from all over the world, children also have the opportunity to observe rare and endangered plant species, as well as learn new ways to protect the environment. This 127-acre botanical garden regularly offers activities and events throughout the year, so families aren’t just limited to visiting during the summer.

Jump ‘N Jammin

For families who want to tire out their more active children, Arcadia’s go-to indoor kids play center is Jump ‘N Jammin, which is located inside Westfield Santa Anita. The padded playground features multi-level play structures, giant slides, obstacle courses, foam ball blasters, a ball pit, and a bouncy house. The entrance fee for kids is reasonably priced, while parents are free. After a day of playing at Jump ‘N Jammin, the entire family can enjoy the many shopping, dining, and entertainment options available at the mall.

Summer Concerts and Movies

Every summer, the City of Arcadia and Recreation Department announces its schedule for free summer concerts and movies at City Hall West Lawn, which is always free to the public. Although concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. with movies starting at dusk, many families go to the park earlier to secure a spot on the lawn. This year, the summer concert and movies series will be available from June 28 to August 9.

Bonita Skate Park

Whether your kids want to participate in the park’s many skate festivities or simply go to watch, Bonita Skate Park is a great place to find people perfecting their skating techniques. Classes, competitions, and other special events are typically held in this park throughout the year. Since this is a skate park for more advanced skaters, it might not be the best venue for families with young children or beginner-level skaters. However, families can also visit the education center and baseball field next door.
