Tired of the same old date routine and want to do something fun for an evening out? Want to impress someone by being more creative than a dinner and a movie? San Diego County is full of options that you may not have even considered. Save the movies, hikes, balloon rides, and beach strolls for another day and check out these non-boring date ideas instead.

Take Trapeze Lessons - Escondido

Head down to Escondido to Trapeze High to take a class. This training facility welcomes people of any age, ability, or skill level. There isn’t anything quite as fun as flying through the air (with proper harnesses and safety precautions, of course). They offer classes, workshops, and special events, if you want to make this an ongoing date idea.

Do-It-Yourself Gourmet Chocolates - El Cajon

Don’t just go to the store and buy a box of chocolates, go make the chocolates yourself. In El Cajon, you can take a true gourmet chocolate class at Dallmann Fine Chocolates. This hands-on, two-hour class will teach you how to use chocolate molds, temper chocolate, infuse flavors into a ganache, prepare and pipe fillings, and close shells with the art of traditional chocolate-making. Just bring a pair of comfortable shoes and an apron. All equipment and ingredients will be supplied, making for a fun, educational (and delicious) time, all of which ends with the eating of truffles.

Go Flyboarding - Downtown San Diego

Want to have a date that really soars? Head to Downtown San Diego, take Harbor Drive, then stop at Cabrillo Isle Marina to Fly Guys Watersports to go flying—on water. Call it a jetpack or a hoverboard, but the flyboarding contraption uses propulsion tech that allows you to swim like a dolphin or fly above the ocean. Good for all ages and said to be “as easy as riding a bike,” flyboarding will make for an exhilarating experience for two.

Jump on Trampolines - Chula Vista

If you’re looking for a date activity that’s fun but also kind of a workout, stop by Sky Zone Trampoline Park in Chula Vista. While your heart is fluttering, it’s a fun way to get the heart pumping with freestyle jumping, Skyslam (trampoline basketball), the Foam Zone, the Warped Wall, and more. This facility is also good for group activity fun (double dates?) with dodgeball and strategy game, Skywars.

Swim With Sharks - La Jolla Shores

Between May and October, female leopard sharks flock to the sand flats of La Jolla Shores to give birth. SD Expeditions gives you the chance to snorkel alongside the sharks in the warm, shallow waters. Completely harmless to humans, these sharks will make your next date feel extreme without actually putting you in danger. You and your date will probably also encounter other sea creatures like the shovelnose guitarfish and butterfly ray.

Fly in a Biplane - Kearny Mesa

Instead of walking the beaches, fly over them. Head to Montgomery Airport close to Kearny Mesa and you and your date will be able to take an open cockpit biplane ride. This aerial tour lasts for 20 to 60 minutes, and you get to choose the flight path. You and your date get to ride up front and enjoy the view while you fly over San Diego. If you’re feeling frisky, ask for the pilot to do some stunts and rolls.

Kayak Through Sea Caves - La Jolla Shores

Starting in La Jolla Shores, the La Jolla Sea Caves Kayak Tour will give you the chance to paddle for one-to-two miles during a 90-minute tour. Your ticket includes tandem kayaks, paddles, life jackets, helmets for cave exploration, and a guide. You can also throw in a wetsuit rental for an extra $10. Not only will you get a nice workout for your arms and core, but you’ll also get to explore some of the coolest geological formations in the region. Floating out on the open water together, you and your date are sure to have a great time.
