As Illinois’ fourth-largest city, Naperville has a strong sense of community, a thriving local dining scene, and beautifully manicured greenspaces. Whether you’re new to the city or just visiting, you’ll find that Napervillians have a lot of pride in the history and charm of their city—and with good reason. If you want to experience the best this booming suburb has to offer, these are the very best things to do in Naperville.

Go for a Stroll Down the Riverwalk

A 1.75-mile path runs alongside the West Branch of the DuPage River, forming the crown jewel of Downtown NapervilleThe Naperville Riverwalk. Everyday (especially when the weather’s nice), you’ll see Napervillians walking their dogs, going for a jog, or simply sitting at the edge of the path with their feet dangling over the water. Indicative of Naperville’s spirit, the riverwalk combines urban space and the beauty of nature; journey down the pathway and you’ll find several gazebos, public art displays, blooming gardens, community plazas, and even a cafe.

The riverwalk is also home to a Paddleboat Quarry, a yearly Holi festival at the Grand Pavilion, and Centennial Beach, a former limestone quarry repurposed into a community swimming pool. Or, for anyone seeking a little bit more adventure, you can kayak the river.

Climb to the Top of Moser Tower

Two-hundred fifty-three steps lead to the top of Moser Tower, an open-air structure overlooking the riverwalk and all of Downtown Naperville. Construction on the 160-foot tower began in 1998, and it was funded by the Naperville community as a landmark for future generations. At the top of the tower, the carillon houses 72 bells that chime regularly for Naperville residents.

During operating hours, you can take a guided tour to the top of the tower for $3. Though the climb is a bit intense, get ready for a spectacular view; on a clear day, you can see the Chicago skyline from the top of the tower.

Visit Naper Settlement, Especially During a Special Event

Naper Settlement is an outdoor history museum just down the road from Downtown Naperville. Housing a mansion built in 1883, a Civil-War era Episcopal church, a fully operational blacksmith forge, and 15 other preserved or reconstructed historical buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries, this local attraction is a piece of Naperville frozen in time.

Aside from being an educational resource, the settlement also serves as a cultural and social heart of the community. Throughout the year, Naper Settlement hosts many noteworthy events such as Civil War Days in May, the Harvest Pow Wow in September, All Hallows Eve in October, and Christkindlmarket in December.

Enjoy a Pint at Quigley’s

Quigley’s Irish Pub occupies a reclusive corner of Downtown Naperville. The entire pub was designed, built, and shipped over from Ireland to be reconstructed in the historic Jefferson Hill Building on Jefferson Avenue between North Central College and the Naperville Riverwalk. Holding to the Gaelic tradition of bringing the community together with hearty food and great drinks, Quigley’s is a popular spot for locals seeking a laidback escape from the fervent bar scene of Downtown Naperville’s main thoroughfare.

Stop in on Mondays for $5 burgers, Saturday nights for live music, or any day of the week for a pint of Guinness. (Also, their patio is dog-friendly.)

Go on a Naperville Ghost Tour

Chicago Hauntings Tours recently took over the historic ghost tours of Naperville. On select Fridays and Saturdays, “Naperville Hauntings” departs from Quigley’s Irish Pub and tours historic sites rumored to have paranormal activity. Grab your EMF (electromagnetic field) detector and search for ghosts in Downtown Naperville, on North Central College’s campus, and near the Naperville train station. Even if you don’t have a paranormal encounter, you’ll learn about local legends and Naperville’s ghostly history.

Treat Yourself to a Macaron and Hot Chocolate From Le Chocolat du Bouchard

As a quintessential representation of Naperville’s charm, Le Chocolat du Bouchard is a French bistro and patisserie serving chocolate, wine, and gourmet desserts. The left side of the establishment serves as an espresso bar and cafe while the right side features the patisserie, bakery, and chocolate shop.

Many shoppers walking along Washington Street can’t pass by the bright window display without popping in for a peek at the artisan sweets. Their vanilla macarons are to die for, especially when paired with a classic hot chocolate.

Catch a Movie at Hollywood Palms

With an extensive menu and a full-service bar, Hollywood Palms is a one-stop-shop for a fun night in Naperville. With student discounts and matinee prices before 5:30 p.m., this theater is especially popular with local college students. Most notably, the theater has a massive, jungle-themed lobby with real movie memorabilia on display and old movie posters plastered on the walls. Each auditorium is also filled with intricate decor.
