The “Food Network” has spoken, and according to an article by KGUN 9, Grandma Tony’s Pizza and Wings has earned a spot on their Best Pizza’s in America’s Biggest Cities List. The local pizzeria joint stand outs out from the rest because of its quality ingredients, and their supreme pie was referred to as a “hands-down favorite.” With locations in East Tucson near Woodland Villas and Pueblo Villas East, it’s no surprise that locals flock to this notable pizza eatery.

And while we wouldn’t expect anything less from the city that has become a major foodie haven, there are many great pizza joints throughout Tucson that would please the palate of any pie lover. From Chicago-style deep dish to the innovative Neapolitan pie, here’s a list of the best Tucson neighborhoods for pizza.

University

West University neighborhood

When a college is centered in any major city, you know you’ll find three things: beer, coffee, and pizza. Luckily, the University neighborhood in Tucson has expanded their pizza options beyond the typical grab-and-go slices that most students are used to having. With pizza joints as varied as the shops, homes, and culture of the area, you’ll find plenty of pizza options that fit a college budget.

1702 Craft Beer and Pizza was described by Tucson Foodie as a favorite among students, beer fanatics, and pizza lovers. With locations also in North Tucson and East Tucson, Magpie’s Gourmet Pizza 4th Avenue has been a neighborhood favorite thanks to its fresh homemade sauce and specialty pies like the Mag-nificent Giant (italian sausage, pepperoni, green bell peppers, black olives, mushrooms, and yellow onions) and The Magpie (tomato ricotta sauce, mozzarella, romano, italian sausage, pepperoni, and mushrooms). Brooklyn Pizza Company is another beloved pizza spot known for their solar-powered baking methods. It also named as the “Best Place to Get a Slice”by Tucson Weekly. For a modern take on pizza, try the fermented wood-fired sourdough crust at Anello.

Richland Heights

Just off the major road of Campbell Avenue, you’ll find a variety of businesses, both boutique and Tucson-centric, as well as multiple eateries in the Richland Heights neighborhood. This lively part of town, regardless of the time of day, is where you’ll find plenty of pizza joints living up to the city’s reputation, which is why the area has earned the nickname “pizza row."

Old Chicago Pizza and Tap Room offers classic recipes and specialties ranging from their Italian Grinder to a Steak and Beer Cheese Pizza with sauce made from Guinness. Upper Crust Pizza is a rustic counter service pizza joint with a hip vibe for slices and pies. Pionic Pizza offers artisan style pizzas as well as build-your-own pizzas that are baked to perfection at this contemporary brick-lined counter service establishment. Claiming they can make fresh pizzas in just under two minutes, the location was featured as one of the newest locations to join “pizza row.” 

Downtown

Downtown Tucson is known for its arts and culture vibe, one-of-a-kind shops and eateries, and high-density housing that allows residents to walk from their doorstep to the nearest spot for a slice.

Empire Pizza and Pub on East Congress Street doesn’t disappoint with their interpretation of New York style pizza, and they offer a late night menu for those craving a slice after midnight. Fired Pie, also on Congress, offers customized thin-crust pizzas with an organic approach to recipes.

Catalina Foothills Estates

An area with manicured yards, pristine streets, and the backdrop of the scenic Catalina Foothill Mountains, Catalina Foothill Estates is a neighborhood close to high-end shopping areas, fine dining, and the heart of Central Tucson. Homeowners in this area have pizza options that range from the quick slice to patio-seating restaurants with gourmet pie options. 

Humble Pie, in the trendy La Encantada shopping center, offers a pizza to “suit every taste,” with Arizona Daily Star making a nod to some of their distinct choices like the Egg Pizza and the B.L.T. with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on top. Oregano’s offers Chicago-style varieties with outdoor seating for mountain views. And finally, for wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, try Fiamme Pizza located near the Tierra Serena Townhouses.

Sam Hughes is a historic district that offers residents easy access to nearby pizza shops such as Rocco’s Little Chicago Pizza, which was featured on Guy Fieri’s “Diner’s, Drive-In’s & Dives.” Rocco’s was given a special nod for their variations of thin crust pies and stuffed crust specialties. Falora Pizza is another local favorite that offers wood-oven baked artisan style thin-crust pizzas while Fresco Pizzeria & Pastaria offers both white and red sauces, as well as gluten-free and vegan options.
