A true center for trendy styles and eclectic shopping, Austin boasts a wide range of vintage boutiques and secondhand clothing stores, all loaded with unique finds from decades past. Excellent vintage shops can be found throughout the city, but for the highest concentration of top-quality spots, you’ll want to head to these four neighborhoods.

South Congress

As Austin’s premier shopping and dining region south of Lady Bird Lake, South Congress plays host to a plethora of hip boutiques, including a sizable number of shops specializing in vintage styles.

At Prototype Vintage Design, you’ll find a beautifully-organized selection of men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing from the mid-to-late 20th century, with a special emphasis on the 1980s and 1990s. The store’s spacious layout makes it easy to browse, and the shop tags include detailed information on the item’s era and size conversions. Considering the quality of the garments, Prototype’s pricing is extremely reasonable, with on-trend pieces like a floral mini dress from the 1960s with a Peter Pan collar going for just $48.

A women’s vintage shop carrying garments from the 1920s-1980s, Bloomers and Frocks is a petite and charming store with a fantastic emphasis on inclusive sizing. While many vintage boutiques fail to carry garments appropriate for curvy women, Bloomers and Frocks takes the time and effort to keep sizing as diverse as possible, and the garment tags include modern size conversions for shoppers’ convenience. Bloomers and Frocks specializes in pieces from the 1940s-1960s, with most pieces available for under $200.

Instagram fashionistas in the Austin area flock to Feathers Boutique for its incredible blend of vintage pieces, re-worked garments, locally-made artisanal jewelry, and home goods. Prices at this small shop are a bit higher than other Austin vintage stores — classic tees from the 1970s-1990s go for $40-50, while mink coats from the 1940s sell for $700+.

East Austin

Austin’s current epicenter of cool, East Austin tempts chic style mavens with its own array of well-stocked vintage shops.

One of the city’s most famous boutiques for vintage clothing, Charm School Vintage is basically the East Side equivalent of Feathers, right down to the Instagram popularity, impeccable quality, and somewhat-splurgy pricing. Charm School carries womenswear from the 1960s-1990s, and their selection of concert tees is among Austin’s best, currently including a Willie Nelson tee from the 1970s ($144), a shirt from Bruce Springsteen’s “The Boss Is Back” tour ($198), and a Bob Dylan tee from 1989 ($178).

A quirky shop-within-a-shop (sharing a space with Farewell Books), Las Cruxes features both new and used clothing with an eclectic and artistic aesthetic. Vintage garments and accessories from the 1980s and 1990s are especially plentiful here, and while the shop focuses on womenswear, men can also find pieces like a 1990s Lacoste windbreaker or Levis 501 acid-washed jeans. If you’re a vinyl collector, Las Cruxes also carries an impressive collection of records, with a particular emphasis on soul music.

West Campus

The UT area attracts shops catering to a youthful and trend-conscious clientele, so it stands to reason that West Campus is a prime locale for hip and reasonably-priced vintage shopping, especially if you’re a streetwear enthusiast.

A popular spot for vintage streetwear, Lo-Fi VIntage has become an Austin destination for 1980s and 1990s concert tees, with current offerings including a New Kids On the Block tour shirt ($100), a Milli Vanilli tee from the early 1990s ($125), and a Heart concert shirt from the late 1980s ($100).

Still need a 1990s graphic t-shirt fix? Monkies Vintage on Guadalupe Street will hook you up with Beavis and Butt-Head shirts, authentic 1990s Tommy Hilfiger gear, and even vintage tees from luxury brands like Gucci and Chanel.

North Loop

With its relaxed vibe, antique houses, and warm neighborhood energy, North Loop is an excellent choice for an only-in-Austin shopping experience featuring a small but mighty group of vintage shops.

Largely considered the grande dame of Austin vintage boutiques, Blue Velvet carries men’s and women’s styles from the 1940s-1990s. If you like your vintage shops with a strong Texas accent, Blue Velvet is the spot for you, thanks to their formidable assortment of old-school cowboy boots, perfectly-distressed denim, and embroidered motorcycle jackets. Blue Velvet’s gentle pricing (the vast majority of items are under $100) definitely contributes to its enduring popularity; it’s been open since 1994 and shows no signs of slowing down.

On the southern corner of North Loop, New Bohemia offers an expertly-curated collection of vintage duds for both men and women, all arranged by era and reasonably-priced (especially considering their excellent condition). Their t-shirt and jewelry repertoires are particularly impressive, but fans of vintage swimwear, denim jackets, and sunglasses will also be very happy here.
