In 1963, Arizona Highways Magazine editor Don Dedera saw a defunct railroad depot in Mayer, Arizona and apparently thought to himself, that would make a great home. So, he had architect Fred Guirey load it on a truck and drive it 75 miles down the old Black Canyon Freeway to a spot near State Route 51 and Northern Avenue near the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.

From there, the 750 square-foot depot was converted and expanded into a home. In 2010-11, it was renovated but you’ll still find the original fir hardwoods and other materials from the depot that dates back to 1898. Now a 2,681 square-foot three-bedroom, three-bath residence, it’s on the open market asking $1,050,000.

Don’t worry, they’ve updated the place since its train days. The home includes features such as a rock wall fireplace, limestone floors, and chapel ceilings in the master bedroom, living room, and dining room. The best part might be the massive porch outside with stunning views of the Valley below.
