Dallas is famous for BBQ and steak, but you might be surprised to learn that it’s also a great city for vegetarians and vegans. The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is an area with tons of great restaurants to satisfy any foodie. Even if you’re not a vegan, you won’t want to pass up these innovative restaurants. Here are some of the can’t miss vegetarian and vegan eateries in all categories, from bakeries to Tex-Mex food.

Spiral Diner - Southside Fort Worth

The flagship location of Spiral Diner has been serving up 100 percent vegan food in the trendy Magnolia district in Fort Worth’s Southside. They now have a second location in Dallas and are opening a third location in Denton later this year. From nachos and burgers to an annual Thanksgiving dinner, this restaurant offers completely vegan versions of all your favorites.

Reverie Bakeshop - Richardson

Rich, delicious baked goods are a special treat that most people must give up when they decide to follow a vegan lifestyle. Reverie Bakeshop in Richardson is the rare exception. It’s a sweet shop with all-vegan treats, including doughnuts, gluten-free carrot cakes, and even raw triple berry cheesecake. If there’s a vegan dessert or pastry you’ve been missing, you’ll find it at Reverie.

El Palote Panaderia - Lower East Dallas

Life in DFW is all about Tex-Mex. It’s hard to imagine how Tex-Mex staples like tamales and queso could possibly be vegan, but El Palote Panaderia is the real deal: the owner had a heart health scare and had to change his diet for health reasons, so he learned how to make plant-based versions of his favorites. Enjoy vegan tortas, al pastor tacos, flautas, and enchiladas in this Lower East Dallas establishment. They offer an amazing six different varieties of soy-based faux meats.

Cinnaholic - Southlake/Richardson

This California-based chain has established a presence in DFW, with locations in Southlake and Richardson. Cinnaholic offers many varieties of gourmet cinnamon rolls, from butterscotch to cookie dough. Everything they serve is completely vegan, so you won’t have to betray your conscience (but your diet may be a different story, if you’re watching calories!).

Kalachandji’s - East Dallas

Located in East Dallas, this Indian buffet restaurant is the longest-running vegetarian restaurant in the city. Kalachandji’s menu is nearly all vegan, with the nut loaf and vanilla sweet rice the only exceptions. Even though the items on the menu are all vegetarian, don’t expect to go away hungry: this is the kind of food that sticks to your ribs. Starting in September 2017, they will offer the art of Indian cooking at home.

Sushi Zushi - Southlake/Uptown

There’s nothing like meeting friends or a date for a plate of sushi, especially at Sushi Zushi. While vegans and vegetarians can usually eat an avocado roll or a cucumber roll at almost any sushi restaurant, these choices can get boring pretty quickly. Excite your taste buds with items from the special vegan and vegetarian menu, like tofu yakisoba or the vegetarian tropical roll. There are locations in Southlake and Uptown Dallas and both offer happy hour specials every day until 7 p.m.

Sankofa Kitchen - Red Bird

Sankofa Kitchen is the kind of place where vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a meal with their carnivore friends, since the restaurant offers both. Their specialty is making vegan versions of comfort foods, like “fish” po’ boys and crispy “chicken” sandwiches. The vegan and vegetarian menu is available at any time, but the Dallas restaurant offers an all-vegan buffet every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

V-Eats Modern Vegan at Trinity Groves - West Dallas

Located in a restaurant park in East Dallas that mostly caters to meat eaters, V-Eats Modern Vegan offers vegan alternatives to the restaurants next door. Enjoy vegan versions of comfort food like chili cheese dogs, brisket sliders, and buffalo mac and cheese. This is even a go-to spot for Sunday brunch, with plant-based versions of migas and biscuits with sausage gravy.

D’Vegan - Lake Highlands

Asian food is often vegetarian friendly, but D’Vegan takes it up a notch. Enjoy completely vegan versions of some Vietnamese favorites, like pho and lemongrass “beef” vermicelli. They even offer a tofu-based vegan cheesecake for dessert. It’s located in a corner of the Hong Kong Market in Lake Highlands, so it’s easy to miss. D’Vegan flies under the radar with some of the most convincing meat alternatives you’ll find anywhere.

There’s no need to stick to baked potatoes and plain salads at steakhouses. The Dallas-Fort Worth area can be a great place to find healthy vegan and vegetarian fare when you know where to look.
