The Houston home-building market is still going strong, especially in the suburbs. Even amid an oil slump, the national housing research group Metrostudy says Houston still ranks No. 2 in the country for homebuilding (second only to Dallas).

Houston builders built 25,489 new homes in the area in 2016, with the city's western suburbs showing the greatest home-building activity.

The study says developers are focusing on building more affordable homes on small lots, too, with many builders gravitating toward $200,000 to $350,000 homes on 50-foot lots.

The study also ranks the most active master-planned communities for home-building. Those are:

1. Riverstone

2. Woodforest

3. Aliana

4. Sienna Plantation

5. Miramesa

6. Cross Creek Ranch

7. Bridgeland

8. Imperial Oaks

9. Tamarron

10. Wildwood
