The 2.3-acre lot that was once the Mission Beach Elementary School will now be developed into 59 homes in Mission Beach. The site is east of Mission Boulevard between Kennebeck Court and Santa Barbara Place. According to the San Diego Reader, the project received unanimous approval from the California Coastal Commission.

Some Mission Beach residents don’t feel as if the plan is consistent with the community as the school had been described as dilapidated and fenced for blocks after closing in 1987. It was sold in 2013 for the sum of $18.5 million.

The Coastal Commission staff reviewed the project and asked for more park space and fewer units. The developers then increased the park size to one-third of an acre, altering its triangular strip into a rectangle along Mission Beach Boulevard, giving the look of a courtyard.

Other requirements to approve the project were a traffic study during tourist season as well as that the park is dedicated as a city park.
