As of now, 25 states have banned smoking in all enclosed workplaces, including bars. According to a story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Fort Worth is following suit by finally enacting a ban on smoking in bars. Smoking was already banned in many places in the city but was still allowed in bars.

The City Council recently directed city attorneys to write a new ordinance that prohibits smoking in bars, which is an expansion of the existing rules. Smoking-related businesses, whose primary sales come from cigars and tobacco products, are exempt from the ordinance.

Mayor Betsy Price told the Star-Telegram that anti-smoking advocates lobbied hard for the change. Even the legendary bar Billy Bob’s in the tourist-friendly Stockyards area went smoke-free at customer request in April 2016.

Fort Worth was the only major city in Texas that did not have an ordinance prohibiting smoking in all public locations. Many Texas lobbying groups and organizations called for the change and the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce also applauded the move, citing results of their poll that found 85 percent of responded said they would support a smoke-free ordinance.

“The timing seems to be really good for this,” Mayor Price told the Star-Telegram. “Things have dramatically changed in the last few years. All the cities in Tarrant County are now smoke-free with the exception of Fort Worth. This would make Tarrant County totally smoke-free.”
