The sprawling Otay Ranch community in Chula Vista outside of San Diego has a lot going on. Since opening in 1999, the 5,300-acre planned community has added dozens of neighborhoods, thousands of homes, five elementary schools, two high schools, multiple parks and more. One thing it didn’t have was a hotel.

That has officially changed as a 148-room Marriott Residence Inn will open this Friday in the community. While it’s the first hotel to open in Chula Vista in two decades, per the San Diego Union-Tribune, it’s also just the first of many hotels about to inundate the growing region.

Baldwin & Sons, the developer behind this hotel, also has plans to open a 150-room Courtyard by Marriott adjacent to this one. That project is still 18-to-24 months out on construction. Both hotels are part of a 36-acre development that will also include 600 for-sale and rental homes as well as a park.

The $33 million hotel is a welcome addition to the region, which usually sees tourists or business travelers staying in Downtown San Diego instead due to the lack of available rooms.

And all of this is just the beginning. Two more hotels are on the horizon, a 135-room Ayres Hotel in the Millenia section of Otay Ranch, as well as a Hilton coming soon to nearby Eastlake. There are also plans for a convention center and hotel by the Chula Vista waterfront.
