Rankings vary, but most experts agree that San Diego is currently one of the hottest housing markets in the nation. Homes only stay on the market for 28 days according to Realtor.com and the median home price was up seven percent from 2015 to 2016 ($493K). If you’re looking to put down roots here, you better put them down sooner than later.

If you’re looking to get a foot in but aren’t sure where to start looking, San Diego Magazine just made your life easier by naming the best local neighborhoods for 2017. Of course these kinds of lists are subjective, and some of these neighborhoods are technically their own cities, but take it from the people who cover the region for a living.

Their selections include La Mesa with it’s small-town charm, surfing-centric Imperial Beach where you really need to get tacos, revitalized South Oceanside, centrally-located Kearny Mesa, the suddenly Charger-less Mission Valley, and the affordable urban village of El Cerrito.

These neighborhoods vary in terms of locale and offerings but they’ve all seen plenty of development and revitalization in recent years. While median prices keep rising and luxury home prices reach into the millions there are still plenty of opportunities in all six to find an affordable home.
