An annual study by online auto insurance marketplace QuoteWizard determined the worst states to drive in. As anyone who's ever sat in traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge or 405 could guess, California has hit the number one spot.

Says QuoteWizard, “the dubious honor of having the worst drivers in the country goes to California. After jumping from second in our 2016 rankings, California is now firmly the worst.”

When broken down by city, five of the top ten worst places to get in your car can be found in the Golden State: Sacramento (No. 1), Riverside (No. 3), San Diego (No. 5), Los Angeles (No. 6), and Bakersfield (No. 10).

With data from speeding tickets, citations, accidents, DUIs and fatalities, QuoteWizard concluded that the cause for California’s traffic woes was an increase in DUIs, gridlocked expressways, and excessive smartphone use.
