Babies born in Los Angeles County have a higher average life expectancy than the United States average, according to one study by the LA Department of Health’s Social Science Research Council. While children born in LA County in 2014 have an average life expectancy of 82.1 years, nationally, the average is 78.8 years for children born that same year.

There were wide divides across the county when creating that average, however. LA County’s top five neighborhoods for life expectancy included Walnut Park (90.5 years), Malibu (89.8), Castaic (88.9), Rowland Heights (87), and Rancho Palos Verdes (86.7). The bottom five were Sun VIllage (75.8), East Rancho Dominguez (76.1), Lake Los Angeles (76.2), Westmont in Pomona (76.3), and Lancaster (76.4).

Of the 106 cities tallied, just nine were below the national average. However, the gap from top to bottom still ranged 14 years (a wide gulf for a single county).

When dissecting the study, KPCC also compared LA County to the world’s longest country-by-country expectancies. LA will rank 11th overall, just behind Israel and France (both with 82.2 years of average life expectancy).
