The latest mixed-use development coming to the Dallas-Fort Worth area is Grandscape, which will be on the south side of State Highway 121/Sam Rayburn Tollway between Spring Creek Parkway and Plano Parkway. The 400-acre Grandscape project is currently under development in The Colony, which is just two miles west of the booming West Plano area.

Merriman Anderson/Architects was recently hired to design future phases of the Grandscape project. The company is one of the busiest architecture firms in Dallas, best known for their work on renovating downtown Dallas buildings including the Statler Hotel and the 52-story Drever building at 1401 Elm St.

The Grandscape project is backed by Warren Buffett, whose Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. company owns the Nebraska Furniture Mart, which is the centerpiece of the mixed-use development. The Nebraska Furniture Mart encompasses 560,000 square feet and is the largest store in Texas. The store has four locations, the largest of which is in The Colony.

Grandscape will include an additional 3.9 million square feet of retail, entertainment, attractions, hospitality, dining, and residential space. It is designed to be an attraction for both locals and out-of-town visitors, including corporate employees in town working at Toyota North America, JP Morgan Chase, and Liberty Mutual.

The development will include an indoor racetrack, Andretti Indoor Karting and Games, which is scheduled to open in 2019. Grandscape will also host the first Texas locations of many retail companies, including anchors North Dakota-based Scheels sporting goods and Galaxy Theaters. It will also include the Twigs Bistro & Martini Bar and the Thirsty Lion gastropub.

The Grandscape project will open in several phases over the next few years, with the first scheduled to open in late 2018.
