The Metro is at it again, but this time it’s feeling things out first. The public transit company plans to install its pilot bike share program in the Echo Park neighborhood beginning Oct. 8, just in time for CicLAvia, the biggest open streets cycling event in Los Angeles.

According to The Eastsider LA, the new bike-share station will be placed at Echo Park and Park avenues and would include a kiosk and 19 bicycles. Riders would need to pay at the kiosk before renting a bike, which can be returned to any Metro bike share station.

Here’s the pricing rundown:

  • Frequent Riders (5+ trips a month): $20 for a 30-day pass. With this option, trips that are 30-minutes or less are free. However, riders will be charged $1.75 every 30 minutes afterward. Passes renew every month if purchased with a TAP card.
  • Flex Pass (2-5 trips a month): $40 for the year. With this option, riders will be charged $1.75 every 30 minutes. Can be purchased with a TAP card.
  • Walk-Up Riders: With this option, riders will be charged $3.50 for every 30 minutes. Transit users can pay using their credit card at any kiosk.

There is no clear timeline indicating how long the station would be up. The transit giant will need to gather feedback and evaluate overall ridership to see if there’s enough demand for a bike-share system in the neighborhood.

Earlier this year, the Metro extended their bike share system by launching a bike program in Venice as well as adding several bike-share stations throughout Pasadena and the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro.
