The Oakland A’s had planned to construct their new ballpark on a site owned by the Peralta Community College District, but district trustees recently backed out in a move that stunned the franchise. Now, city officials are hoping the team will consider option B: the Coliseum. Yep, Oakland wants the team to consider building a new home on the site of their current one.

The Coliseum site offers certain features that the Peralta site didn’t have, including a huge parking lot, easy freeway access, and acres of undeveloped land for housing, hotels, and entertainment. With the infrastructure and environmental clearance all ready to go, council members hope the team will consider staying put, according to the SF Chronicle.

The Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Authority has already discussed the idea of selling or leasing some or all of the Coliseum site to the A’s. The team could then develop the Coliseum into a baseball-only stadium.

However, according to Councilman Larry Reid, A’s President Dave Kaval is not sure about the idea. The Coliseum does have its pros, but there are also many problems. Since the stadium is in East Oakland, it’s five miles from the up-and-coming neighborhoods, and the A’s had hoped to build a walkable ballpark that would attract more casual fans. The Coliseum also wouldn’t generate the luxury suites, naming rights, or ad revenue necessary to pay for a new ballpark.

Stay tuned, as this coliseum conundrum is just getting started.
