Moosie’s Ice Cream – Kensington

Located in the San Diego neighborhood of Kensington, Moosie’s Ice Cream offers 16 rotating flavors of premium, handmade ice cream from the traditional to the seasonal. Not only do they offer custom ice cream cakes and hand-packed pints, they will even give you the option of splitting a single scoop with two flavors. They make their waffle cones fresh daily and offer cookie sandwiches, sundaes, hot toppings, shakes, malts, floats, graham cracker crust ice cream pies, and more.

Lappert’s Ice Cream & Coffee Lounge – Poway

Lappert’s Ice Cream in Poway prides itself on having flavors from all around the world. Some of their original flavors include Hawaiian Sea Salt Caramel, which has pink salted caramel fudge in their natural sweet cream. There’s also Kona Coffee, one of their award-winning flavors made with cold-filtered coffee.

Pappalecco – Cardiff by the Sea

This Tuscan-themed restaurant serves breakfasts, paninis, pizza, salads, wine, and of course, gelato. Pappalecco can be found in CardiffDel Mar, Hillcrest, Kensington or Little Italy. They offer their ice cream up to four scoops by cup or cone. They also offer a gelato chocolate chip cookie sandwich, a croissant stuffed with gelato, or an affogato — espresso over a scoop of gelato.

The Baked Bear – Carmel Valley

The Baked Bear has quite a few locations, including Carmel Valley, Pacific Beach, and Temecula. Made with rBGH-free ice cream, their all-natural mix utilizes natural stabilizers and pure cane sugar. Their stores include cookies, brownies, waffles, and donuts which can be used to sandwich their ice cream. It’s then hot-pressed panini-style and drizzled with caramel or rolled in a topping, making a decadent dessert.

Niederfrank’s Ice Cream – National City

Open since the 1940s, Niederfrank’s Ice Cream uses “the most antique, inefficient, outdated and expensive process in the world” to make their ice cream. Niederfrank’s uses fresh whole milk, fresh sweet cream, and natural ingredients. They have a wide range of ice cream and sorbet flavors, including tangerine, butter rum pecan, champagne sorbet, and more.

iDessert – Little Italy

While this Downtown ice cream shop offers many treats, including handcrafted chocolates, cookies, candies and biscotti, iDessert gives their customers the opportunity to customize their own dessert. At an iPad station, you select the ingredients and flavors to customize your treat. This shop gives dairy- or gluten-free options, and has 16 handcrafted crusts (including meringues and chocolate shells), eight house-made gelatos and sorbet, five types of authentic cream, four flavors of cake made from scratch, six sauces and fruit compotes, and nine types of crunch (such as brownie bits or caramelized hazelnuts).

Lighthouse Ice Cream – Ocean Beach

Famous for their handmade waffle cones, Ocean Beach’s Lighthouse Ice Cream offers a variety of flavors and toppings for palettes of all types. Moderately priced and open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., they’ve gained a reputation for being one of San Diego’s best dessert locales. Their infamous waffle ice cream sandwich is one of their most requested menu items.

Nekter Juice Bar – San Marcos

Don’t let the name fool you! This juice bar also offers a healthy alternative to ice cream, with their cashew milk-based ice cream and plant-based ingredients. Their ice cream is free of dairy, gluten, and soy, with no refined sugars, preservatives, or artificial flavors. It comes in several flavors, such as chocolate bliss, tart cherry scoop, or Tahitian and bourbon vanilla. Nekter Juice Bar also has a location in Carmel Valley.

Mariposa Homemade Ice Cream – Normal Heights

Over the last 18 years, Mariposa Homemade Ice Cream has won several awards for Best Ice Cream in San Diego. They have varying locations, including Normal Heights, Oceanside, and Temecula. They not only offer ice cream but also sherbet, sorbet, sundaes, shakes, malts, floats, smoothies, and ice cream pies.

ICMonster – Mira Mesa

Mira Mesa’s ICMonster offers a unique spin on ice cream. In addition to using fresh ingredients and no food coloring, their rolled ice cream is never pre-made and can come with Hong Kong-style egg waffles. If you’re not in the mood for waffles, try it with a donut or simply in a cup. The rolled ice cream is made by utilizing an anti-griddle, pouring a flavored milk mixture, and then adding the customer’s choice of topping.
