Everyone needs a place to unwind after work where they can enjoy a drink or two. Even though a recent post by MillerCoors said that brew pubs are dragging down neighborhood bars, you would never know it if you stop into these classic watering holes. The neighborhood bar is far from declining in Dallas and Fort Worth — it’s thriving. Here’s the essential guide to the must-visit bars in each neighborhood.

Dallas

Sons of Hermann Hall – Deep Ellum

There’s nothing trendy about Sons of Hermann Hall, which first opened in 1911. It’s one of the few places in Dallas that can actually be called historic. It still remains a hotspot in Dallas (in the equally hot Deep Ellum neighborhood) where you can grab a drink at happy hour or take swing dancing lessons in the upstairs ballroom on Wednesday evenings. Just make sure to stop by the ATM on your way there because this bar is cash only.

Windmill Lounge – Oak Lawn

Dallas has a reputation of embracing the trendy and new. But sometimes for a night out, you just want to go somewhere low-key and a little divey. That’s Windmill Lounge, which has been a staple on Maple Avenue in Oak Lawn for years. You’ll find a well-stocked jukebox, a decidedly local crowd, and bartenders who know nearly everyone who walks in their doors. It’s not the fanciest place in town, but it’s a solid choice for a mellow night.

The Round-Up Saloon & Dance Hall – Cedar Springs

What could be a more quintessential Dallas experience than a visit to a cowboy-themed, LGBQT-friendly bar? The Round-Up Saloon & Dance Hall in Cedar Springs is an amazing place for people-watching and some of the best dancing in the city. The Round-Up offers six bar spaces, including one that exclusively serves 40 premium tequila varieties. You can play pool, do some country line-dancing, or even sing your heart out at karaoke. The Round-Up is the kind of bar you have to visit at least once.

Atwater Alley – Highland Park

Atwater Alley is where the residents of the Park Cities area, and its suburbs Highland Park and University Park, go to unwind. It’s a classy, intimate environment where you’ll likely never bump into the stereotypical rowdy bar crowd. Some have described it as more of an old-fashioned speakeasy than a neighborhood bar. But if the definition of a neighborhood haunt is that it reflects the vibe of the people who live there, that definitely applies to Atwater. There’s not a menu, but you’re sure to get a drink you’ll love if you tell the bartender what kind of flavor profile suits your fancy.

The Wild Turkey – North Dallas

North Dallas was one of the hottest places in Dallas back in the 1970s, when it was frequented by members of the Dallas Cowboys. Today, there’s a sense that people have moved on for trendier scenes, but The Wild Turkey is still a neighborhood institution. The decor is a little bit rustic, but there’s also a full menu and this is the kind of place worth a visit, especially on the way home from work.

The Ginger Man – Uptown

Uptown is one of the best neighborhoods in Dallas for enjoying nightlife. You’ll find lots of hip people having a great time every night of the week. While Uptown bars like Parliament are better known for having a fun club scene, sometimes you want something a bit more chill. The Ginger Man is a quieter alternative to loud, bright nightclubs. At The Ginger Man, you’ll find a great selection of beers, including several varieties of craft beer. There’s also a carefully curated menu of appetizers to enjoy with your drinks.

Fort Worth

Houston St. Bar & Patio – Downtown Fort Worth

When you’re enjoying a night on the Fort Worth side of the Metroplex, you’ll know that you’re not simply in Dallas’ shadow, but a great city all its own. Houston St. Bar & Patio is a fun place to relax and unwind in Downtown Fort Worth. The interior of this bar is long and narrow with brick walls, and looks like it would be much more at home in Chicago or New York City. It’s completely casual, so come as you are.

The Usual – Southside

Chances are good that if you ask someone for a bar recommendation in Fort Worth, they’ll mention The Usual — and for good reason. This Southside bar is classy and a bit trendy, more elegant than hipster. The small, intimate environment is perfect for a conversation or date. Serving creative appetizers and craft cocktails reminiscent of the Prohibition Era, The Usual is a sophisticated spot on Magnolia Avenue.
