In the burgeoning Chicago master-planned community Lakeshore East, the same developer behind the in-progress Vista Tower skyscraper is planning several high-rises for the community, including an 80-story tower.

Magellan’s plans for Chicago’s New East Side were announced earlier this month, and the developer pitched community members, Alderman Brendan Reilly (42), and the New Eastside Association of Realtors on the new towers last week. Besides the 80-story tower, the team is planning three other high-rises for the area, which used to be a 28-acre golf course that closed in 2001. bKL Architecture is designing the towers.

The four planned towers would bring more than 2,000 residences — including almost 900 condos — and 500 hotel rooms to the neighborhood. Magellan is working with two development partners, Australia’s Lendlease and South Korea’s Hanwha Engineering & Construction, on the buildings. Lakeshore East is bounded by Columbus and Wacker drives, Randolph Street and Lake Shore Drive.

When meeting with neighbors, the development team fielded questions about traffic implications and obstructed views, according to the Chicago Tribune.

If the four-tower phase goes as planned, there would only be two vacant parcels of land left in Lakeshore East. Ald. Reilly wants one site to be reserved for a public school in the future to serve the growing population of the community.

Development is still in its early stages and will require approval from Ald. Reilly and City Council to move forward. In the meantime, locals can expect more public meetings. The team is hoping to start the development phase by 2018.
