The Obama Presidential Center is set to be built in Jackson Park. The park is included on the National Register of Historic Places, which means federal representatives will review the project before it can begin, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The presidential center is expected to take up approximately 20 acres of the park, according to the report. While the project is expected to benefit the surrounding communities, it is not without controversy. In particular, an above-ground parking garage planned for the Midway Plaisance of Hyde Park has sparked protest.

Federal representatives for various agencies, including the Federal Highway Administration, are expected to consider the park’s history, ecological features, and how the project will affect the community, according to the report.

A City Hall spokesman said the federal reviews are routine, according to the report. Critics of the presidential center plans see the federal reviews as an opportunity to change how the development will affect the park.
