Mount Greenwood

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

Mount Greenwood marks the southwestern edge of Chicago, but its distance from Downtown doesn't mean it lacks the usual character of a city neighborhood. Hallmark architecture and signature cuisine make the area feel like an extension of the city while spacious green spaces and a relaxed pace reminds one of the neighboring suburbs.

Where To Live

Mount Greenwood is largely residential, save for a few campuses and parks. Most of the housing available consists of single-family homes, though some condominiums are in the area. Many of these houses are styled in a cozy bungalow style and include both front and backyards. While no trains run through the neighborhood, many of the main roads include bus service. Living on the north end of the neighborhood would place you near St. Xavier University, while the southern end puts one in walking distance to the expansive Mount Greenwood Park.

Where To Eat

Restaurants in Mount Greenwood mirror the options found throughout the city. Several popular locations serving Mexican, Italian, or American comfort food can be found in the neighborhood. While there's no foodie central that hosts a majority of these restaurants, you’re sure to find something you like along the main roads.

Friday Night Fun

Mount Greenwood residents will often gather at any of the neighborhood’s sports bars or Irish pubs on a Friday night to watch a game or chat with friends. For a rowdier time, a New Orleans-themed entertainment complex called 115 Bourbon Street features a beer garden, Cajun fare, and live country music in a spacious banquet hall. Chicago’s popular Movies in the Park series also takes place in Mount Greenwood Park throughout the summer.

The Perfect Sunday

Mount Greenwood Park is an ideal location for a Sunday afternoon, with an outdoor pool, four tennis courts, lots of baseball diamonds, and a unique playground that includes a splash pad. The park even has an outdoor ice rink to enjoy throughout the winter. For some fun indoors, local strip malls just south of the neighborhood offer shopping and entertainment.
