Marie Kondo, her book "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up," and her Netflix series "Tidying Up" started a decluttering revolution, and Chicago was surely not immune to that trend: Block Club Chicago reported on the influx of stuff coming to the city’s thrift stores—a wave that can certainly be attributed to Kondo’s joyous, and thorough, approach to cleaning up at home.

Whether you’re looking to unload clutter or find new treasures, Chicago neighborhoods are home to plenty of delightful thrift shops. Here's the ones where you'll find the best thrift shops, curated second-hand stores, vintage boutiques, and more.

Logan Square

Neighborhood buildings along street.
It should be no surprise that Logan Square has some amazing thrift spots.

Despite a rush of new development, Logan Square still has a reputation as an artsy neighborhood that attracts a younger population. Walk up and down Milwaukee Avenue to explore some of the neighborhood’s most popular stores, bars, and restaurants. Fullerton, California, and Western Avenues are a few of Logan Square’s other main thoroughfares.

Monarch Thrift Shop

Speaking of digging, Logan Square second-hand stores are filled with treasures for the patient thrifter. Shop a thrift store with a mission at Monarch Thrift Shop, which aims to reduce recidivism by offering employment and donating to support community programs.

Village Discount Outlet

One of many locations throughout the city, the Village Discount Outlet on the edge of the neighborhood, bordering Wicker Park and Bucktown, is brimming with all manner of thrifty goods. But be forewarned: There are no fitting rooms here, so be prepared to take a risk on untried-on clothes or try things on in the open.

Family Thrift Store

Also on Milwaukee, Family Thrift Store has second-hand clothes, accessories, books, and more in an uncharacteristically organized environment with clothes in good condition.

Three Stars Resale Shop

Anyone with plans to redecorate will appreciate the sprawling array of furniture and decor at Three Stars Resale Shop. The selection here is on the pricier side, but furniture here is one-of-a-kind and in pristine collection. There are smaller accessories, like vintage Pyrex bowls, available, too.

El Dorado Thrift

This well-curated store is also rich in treasure like the fabled city it's named after. Head to the front of the store for designer labels, and in the back there's clothes and shoes from less expensive brands in great condition. El Dorado offers a pared-down inventory with the prices of bigger thrift stores.

Wicker Park

Underneath blue line cta station with people walking to and from.
don't miss the unique thrift shops of Wicker Park.

From weeknight cocktails to weekend brunch, Wicker Park is all about going out. Damen and North Avenue are constantly lit up and heavily trafficked by people and cars out and about in the neighborhood. Given the increasingly well-heeled group of visitors and residents of this neighborhood, Wicker Park’s main shopping corridor is dominated by higher-end chain retailers. However, the neighborhood's second-hand stores hold one-of-a-kind finds.

Kokorokoko

Indulge in a blast from the past at Kokorokoko, an 1980s- and 1990s-heavy thrifting spot. If you're looking for the Y2K-era fashions that are back in style, this is the place to go.

Vintage Underground

For more formal attire, visit Vintage Underground, a packed shop known for its large inventory of vintage costume jewelry. There's lots of designer labels sprinkled in.

Silver Moon

If you're a bride-to-be looking for your "something old," this bridal boutique features vintage gowns as well as original designs by owner Liz Meyer.

store B vintage

This small store is known for a gorgeous selection of designer dresses, coats, and shoes, as well as retro serving ware and costumes around Halloween.

Buffalo Exchange/Crossroads Trading Co.

These two stores, located practically across the street from each other, get grouped together as the two second-hand chains in the neighborhood—but they're still worth checking out. Buffalo Exchange is known for trendier clothes and costumes, while Crossroads offers cast-offs from department stores and higher-end labels.

Andersonville

Andersonville has a wonderful small business presence.

Andersonville is known for its major small business presence. Among the kitschy boutiques and crowded brunch spots, thrifters will find plenty of places for second-hand treasure. Clark Street is a good place for shoppers to start.

The Brown Elephant

Thrifters should first check out the Andersonville outpost of The Brown Elephant. This cavernous thrift shop, one of three Brown Elephants in the city, is chock-full of beautiful furniture and all manner of home decor. (Bonus: proceeds from sales benefit LGBTQ health services at Howard Brown Health.)

Good Deal Garage

If you’re still on the hunt for furniture, head toward the Edgewater side of the neighborhood for Good Deal Garage. Good Deal Garage is all about restoring furniture and antiques. Thrifters looking for unique pieces won’t be disappointed.

Mercantile M

While small, this second-hand shop is filled with vintage furniture and unique home goods.

Buffalo Exchange/Crossroads Trading Co.

These two second-hand chains also have outposts located near each other in Andersonville that are worth exploring.

Pilsen has an eclectic blend of shops and restaurants that make it hotspot for the city’s younger crowd. Music enthusiasts are drawn to the neighborhood’s record stores and live music venue Thalia Hall, while others passionately argue about the best place to get tacos. Pilsen’s best second-hand stores are within steps of each other.

Knee Deep Vintage

Right next to Thalia Hall, Knee Deep Vintage specializes in vintage clothes. Expect the rotating collection to span decades. And be sure to check the store’s Instagram page to see what’s on offer.
