North Park

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

Covering a large expanse of grassy parks, quaint residential areas, and multiple college campuses, North Park has a lot to offer within its borders near the northern limits of Chicago. With its many trails and green spaces, the neighborhood maintains a proportion of natural areas that's hard to find in the city. In addition to the forests at LaBagh Woods and North Park Village Nature Center, North Park contains many sports fields as well as several historic cemeteries, including Bohemian National Cemetery.

Where To Live

Much of North Park’s eastern half is residential, as is Pulaski Park, a pocket neighborhood on the north end. To the west, the neighborhood’s parks, nature preserves, and cemeteries take up much of the locality, though there are a lucky few homeowners who live right next to these green spaces. Many homes in the area reflect a European aesthetic brought by the neighborhood’s early residents, and the area overall offers a quieter way of life than the more densely populated parts of the city. While North Park doesn’t have great access to public transportation, homeowners on the south end of the neighborhood may be able to walk to the Kimball Brown Line stop.

Around North Park

Where To Eat

North Park offers a range of cultural cuisine that will send residents on an international tour within the comfortable boundaries of their own neighborhood. Tre Kronor is a staple in the area serving Scandinavian fare that hearkens back to North Park’s Swedish immigrants. Several Asian restaurants in the area are popular as well, offering both dine-in and delivery services, while Libanais just north of the neighborhood offers a wide variety of Lebanese dishes as well as a coffee menu.

Friday Night Fun

Sports enthusiasts can catch an evening game at one of the local colleges, then continue the night over pint glasses filled with imported ales. The bars here are very locally oriented — don't be surprised if the staff and patrons are on a first-name basis. Literary types who have had their fill of European brew might also seek out a poetry reading at one of the schools or local clubs.

The Perfect Sunday

North Park's rich natural landscape will delight lovers of the outdoors. Multiple groves, picnic areas, and green spaces are abuzz with activity in the summer and offer peaceful serenity in the winter. The North Park Nature Center, crown jewel of the area's reserves, provides ample opportunities for Chicagoans to explore the woods, listen in on educational talks, or lend their time with volunteer opportunities.
